The Harvest Moon!

_________________________________________

This Saturday (September 29) is the Harvest Moon -- which is to say, the full moon closest to the first day of autumn.

And suddenly I have the weekend free!

Late in the afternoon my rich employers came downstairs and announced they'd be spending the weekend in California at their friend's vineyard in Napa Valley.  (When you have your own jet, you can make these last-minute decisions!)

We (the house staff) were all thrilled, of course, to get them out of our hair for a few days!

But can you imagine a more beautiful spot to watch the Harvest Moon come up than over the gentle hills of Napa, casting moonlight over the mesmerizing rows of cultivated grapes?

(I doubt they'll do this, but there's a five-course dinner served aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train while it glides through the moonlit vineyards.  How fun and romantic would that be?)

Hope you have something fun planned for this beautiful full moon weekend.

And whatever it is, we'll need music!

If you're a happy-turned person, here's a version of "Shine on Harvest Moon" (from the Ziegfeld Follies of 1931) that will tickle you!  The singer, Ruth Etting, was a great beauty during the Roaring 20's, known as America's Sweetheart of Song.  Here's the YouTube link.

However, if you have drama-queen tendencies, then perhaps we'd better listen to the version by the Queen of Drama Queens herself, the amazing and endearing Liza Minnelli.   And here's the YouTube link to that.

Happy Harvest Moon!

  1. My girlfriend and I actually flew down to Napa this past weekend for our anniversary. I had no idea how similar we are to billionaires! Of course, we flew coach, but we may have tasted some of the same wines.

It was a gorgeous weekend, btw. Normally I'd ask you what wine they came home with, but I suppose it's more likely they'll return having bought a whole vineyard. ;)

I needed a good laugh tonight, Ben! Glad you had a good weekend, and happy anniversary.
